(photo provided by Anna Yoder) (summer 2014) Chato Volcano is an inactive stratovolcano in the Central American Volcanic Arc. This Tertiary- and Quaternary-aged chain of volcanoes extends from Guatemala to Panama. It formed next to a subduction zone where the ~northeast-moving Cocos Plate is diving below the North American Plate and the Caribbean Plate along the Middle-America Trench. About 50 major volcanic centers are present. Chato was active from the Late Pleistocene to the late Holocene (38 ka to 3.8 ka). Shown above is Cerro Chato Lake that fills Chato Volcano's summit crater.
